OUR DERMATOPATHOLOGIST

At MDS, Dr. Jean Liu Urquhart, triple-board certified in Dermatology, Dermatopathology and Mohs Surgery, evaluates and diagnoses skin cancers and skin conditions for our patients and for referring dermatologists. She completed her dermatopathology fellowship at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, under the tutelage of Dr. Jim Fitzpatrick and Dr. Loren Golitz. Dermatopathologists often collaborate with dermatologists, primary care physicians, other dermatopathologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, oncologic surgeons, plastic surgeons and surgical pathologists, as diagnostic care has significant impact on clinical care.

Patients at MDS benefit from Dr. Urquhart’s in-house skin pathology services, which lead to faster results. With her expertise, Dr. Urquhart helps explain processes so patients understand what is happening in the skin at the microscopic level. Diagnosis determines treatment and as our in-house dermatopathologist, Dr. Urquhart collaborates frequently with referring physicians in Eagle and Summit Counties to assist with multidisciplinary patient care.

What is DermatopathologY

Dermatopathology is a specialized field of medicine that processes and evaluates skin biopsies under the microscope for diagnosis. A Dermatopathologist is a medical doctor with specialized training after completing a fellowship. Dermatopathologists are either Dermatologists or Pathologists first. After completing their residencies in Dermatology or Pathology, additional training in a fellowship which is typically 1-2 more years follows, The fellowship trains a dermatopathologist how to process skin biopsies in the laboratory, read skin biopsies and diagnose skin cancers and conditions at the cellular level.
