Melasma

Melasma is a chronic pigmentation disorder characterized by symmetrical brown or gray-brown patches, most often on the face, particularly the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and chin. It is commonly triggered by sun exposure, hormonal changes, and genetics. Management focuses on strict sun protection, prescription skincare, oral therapies, chemical peels, and laser resurfacing. Melasma is one of more difficult skin conditions to treat because of the chronic and fluctuant nature of the condition. Furthermore, while skincare products and laser resurfacing are recommended for treatment, they can also worsen melasma if these treatments are utilized incorrectly. Board certified dermatologists are the most knowledgeable about how to care for this frustrating and recalcitrant condition. A long term maintenance plan is recommended for best results and management.
