Cysts

Cysts are common, usually harmless lumps in the skin and can arise anywhere on the body. They are caused by a clogged pore which then causes a back up of oil, keratin, bacteria and fluid in a sac. Hormonal changes, acne, infections, and certain genetic conditions contribute to cyst formation. While most cysts grow slowly and don’t cause pain, they can become inflamed or infected and may need medical treatment if they change or cause discomfort. Antibiotics, drainage, and injections can help reduce the size of a cyst. Definitive treatment involves surgical excision of the cyst from the skin.
