Fractional Laser Resurfacing
Fractional laser resurfacing is an advanced skin rejuvenating laser technology that treats a fraction of the skin at a time, creating microscopic columns in the skin that stimulate collagen production and promote smoother, healthier skin. Traditional classic laser resurfacing treats the entire surface of the skin, delivering dramatic results for deep wrinkles, scars, and sun damage, but it requires significant downtime, longer healing, and carries a higher risk of side effects. The advantage of fractional laser resurfacing compared to classic laser resurfacing is faster healing, shorter down-time, fewer side effects and lower risk for complications.
Fractional laser resurfacing is categorized into two modalities - nonablative and ablative. Non-ablative fractional lasers deliver energy to the skin, heating columns of skin without damaging the skin to boost collagen with minimal downtime. This treatment is ideal for mild to moderate wrinkles, texture issues, and discoloration. In contrast, ablative fractional lasers also deliver energy to the skin in columns, however with greater energy than nonablative fractional lasers, allowing for precise, deep, and microscopic ablation of the skin. This causes thermal stimulation that promotes collagen remodeling to achieve more dramatic improvement in wrinkles, scars, and skin laxity, requiring longer recovery and healing time.
